Enounters with Children

As children, transformation is accepted as inevitable.  Physical transformation, miracles, happen almost every day – teeth fall, feet grow, hair changes color.  In fact, in many ways, it is amazing how open kids are to miracles, probably because they experience them so tangibly in their own form.  Imagine growing 6 inches in a year!

It’s interesting how firmly our feet get planted on this earth as we journey.  I remember as a child being able to hang upside down, somersault downhill, swim underwater,  just as naturally as walking upright.  My body was more open to possibility!  Perhaps my mind was too.

It is an inspiration to sit today with these children and talk about faith.  It is a reminder to keep my heart open, to welcome God with childlike abandon.  To let go of these things that are beginning to anchor me to the earth.

In fact, when I ask the children what things are in the way – what they can set aside to welcome God more fully, they kind of think I am crazy.  By nature, they are inquisitive; imploring to be filled with love, faith, understanding.

So it is. We can learn a lot from our encounters with children.  Here are some  things I learned from them today:

1.  There is a lot more to learn if you listen for 5 minutes, then if you talk for 100.
2.  Being outside is a lot more interesting than school. Especially if you are thinking about God.
3. It doesn’t hurt to grow.

Transformation.  Let yourself be filled with the light of God and the wonder of children.
