The Ugly Duckling

2 Corinthians 3:17-18
“Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. 18 And all of us, with unveiled faces, seeing the glory of the Lord as though reflected in a mirror, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another; for this comes from the Lord, the Spirit.”

When the youth at Christ church think about “transformation”, some first think about “transfiguration”, from the Harry Potter series. Others think about Transformers, big machines which transform into lovable robots. Others thought about “baby ducks.” Obviously, right? This is because many Century High School students get the opportunity in science class to raise and train baby ducks to do various tricks. Through this they get to watch a miniature process of transformation, a beautiful and sometimes frustrating and painful process. When we raise baby animals we get the opportunity to watch this process more quickly than what we experience as transforming humans. We see the tiny creatures begin life heavy and wet, kicking and pecking their way out of their ivory and brown cages, some ultimately not making it that far. We see them stumble, become ugly ducklings, struggle with even the simplest of tasks. Thankfully, God loves us and walks with us through every stage of our little duckling lives, and it’s through this struggle and these challenges we grow and experience life to the fullest.
